Losing hair? Could laser help?

Hair restoration in Kalispell

Today I'm taking a break from talking about pain and health conditions to talk about stimulating hair growth. Is natural hair restoration possible?

Most people as they age are going to go notice some thinning, hair loss, and pattern baldness which can have a pretty significant effect on your mental health and the way that you view yourself. But it doesn't happen all at once. Your hair follicles change and the hair shafts become thinner and more brittle even while fewer follicles produce hair. How can this process be stopped?

If you've been on Facebook or Instagram or any social media, you've probably seen the ads for all kinds of different solutions for hair loss. There are supplements, abrasive devices, and even light therapy pads or caps that you wear. You might be skeptical about all of these, but the red light devices probably seem like wishful thinking, right?

What does the research say?

It turns out that there is a lot of research behind using red and infrared light and lasers to restore hair growth. In 2020, a study was published that showed great improvement in hair growth. The researchers said that laser therapy "is a non-thermal light therapy method that has a photobiomodulatory effect [meaning that light modulates the biology of the tissues in a positive way]." This study says it "has recently been used to promote wound healing as well as for its anti-inflammatory properties, photo-rejuvenation, and photo-prophylaxis, and as a treatment for various dermatologic disorders." They say "laser therapy was approved for hair loss treatment by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2007."

After 16 weeks of using a light therapy helmet, all the participants in this study had improved hair density and thickness. The only people who had no results were those who used a sham, or fake, light therapy helmet. The researchers did that to account for the placebo effect. Check out their results below!

Our process

At Montana Laser and Medical Center, we have a very unique process to stimulate more hair growth. The first step is an individualized consultation and exam to see if you're a candidate. If you are, the provider will recommend the proper number of sessions needed. Most people need at least 3 sessions, and some people will need more. Over 1-3 months, we will leverage these tools:

  • Aesthetic laser treatment to encourage the growth of new hairs from dormant follicles

  • Laser therapy to stimulate blood flow and encourage healthy follicle formation

  • Home-use LED therapy unit to promote hair density and shaft thickening

  • For some patients, regenerative injections may be recommended as well

Maintenance treatments may also be advisable for some patients once the initial course of care is complete.

How much does hair restoration cost?

Everyone's favorite answer - it depends! Every patient needs an individualized approach, and this starts with a no-charge consultation. If it is likely that we can help you, then a medical exam will be performed which is $50 (if paid on the same day). After that, your individualized treatment plan depends on you and your needs. Treatment plans start as low as $250.

Will hair restoration work for me?

If you have been balding for more than 7 years, it is unlikely that you will benefit from this program. However, if you're not sure, we will be able to tell you at the examination what our chances of success are. Call us today! 406-314-6400
